HIV and Aging

elder woman thinking

Improvements and developments in the treatment and management of HIV over the past decade have produced a population of men and women living with HIV well into their 50s and beyond. However, when it comes to getting older, people with HIV may face more challenges when dealing with common age-related problems than the general population.

Researchers are now exploring the impact of a naturally weakening immune system, side effects of HAART (highly active antiretroviral therapy), as well as adult-onset diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, and osteoporosis, on older people living with HIV.

For example, if a woman with HIV has night sweats, skin changes, and bone loss, she could be experiencing side effects of HIV medication, but she may just be experiencing common symptoms of menopause. If it is the menopause, should she be treated for it?

Talking with your doctor and keeping track of any changes you experience may help you understand what is going on with your body and how to manage problems that arise.
